Pittsburgh Steelers Dominate Atlanta Falcons with a Commanding 24-0 Victory: A Closer Look at the Unstoppable Steelers
In a dazzling display of skill and determination, the Pittsburgh Steelers ended their preseason campaign on a triumphant note, blanking the Atlanta Falcons with an emphatic 24-0 win.
The Steelers, who had already showcased their preseason dominance with a perfect 3-0 record, wrapped up their warm-up matches for the 2023 NFL season in style.
The impeccable performance of the Steelers’ first-team offence made this victory even more remarkable.
They added two more touchdown drives to their preseason tally, maintaining a flawless record of 5-for-5 in scoring touchdowns.
However, the cherry on top was that the team emerged from the preseason unscathed by major injuries to key players, a critical factor as they look ahead to the upcoming season.
Running backs Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren were the stars of the show, capping off two possessions with touchdown runs when the first-team offense took the field against the Falcons.
This dynamic duo exemplified the Steelers’ offensive prowess, making quick work of their opponents at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Kenny Pickett, the promising quarterback, played a crucial role in setting up these touchdowns.
He completed all four of his passes in this game for a total of 86 yards, orchestrating the plays that led to Harris and Warren crossing the goal line.
Pickett’s preseason performance has been nothing short of exceptional, boasting a passer rating of a perfect 158.3 after going 13 of 15 for 199 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions.
While it’s worth noting that the Falcons did not field their starters, the Steelers were determined to deliver a strong performance.
Kenny Pickett shared his perspective: “It was solidifying the preseason and finishing strong. Our main goal was to get out there and score some points. We scored two touchdowns, which is a really good start.”
One of the game’s standout moments was Pickett’s connection with wide receiver Diontae Johnson for a 33-yard gain on third-and-5.
This precision pass set up Harris’ touchdown and showcased the Steelers’ offensive capabilities. Pickett wasn’t finished; he followed up with a 35-yard pass to George Pickens, positioning the Steelers at the Atlanta 1-yard line, where Harris promptly scored to cap off an impressive 92-yard drive.
George Pickens’ catch demonstrated his incredible skills, reaching above cornerback Natrone Brooks to make the grab while contorting his body to stay in bounds. Such moments of brilliance highlighted the Steelers’ depth and talent on the offensive side.
The Steelers defence also had its moment to shine, securing a three-and-out on Atlanta’s next possession. T.J. Watt, though seeing limited playing time, managed a second-down sack that put the Falcons in a precarious position after Elandon Roberts had a 4-yard tackle for a loss on the first down.
Special teams played a pivotal role, too, with Calvin Austin III returning a punt for 21 yards, setting the Steelers up at the Atlanta 29-yard line.
Pickett and his teammates made swift work of the Falcons once more, with Harris gaining 16 yards on a screen pass, followed by a 5-yard gain that placed the ball at the Atlanta 8-yard line.
Warren then capitalized on a massive hole in the right side of the offensive line, extending the Steelers’ lead to 14-0.
With the first-team offense has done its job, Steelers’ head coach Mike Tomlin introduced the second unit. Remarkably, they performed admirably as well, with the defence securing another three-and-out and Mitch Trubisky leading the team to two scoring drives.
These drives culminated in a 38-yard field goal by Chris Boswell and a 5-yard touchdown run by Anthony McFarland, further expanding the Steelers’ lead to 24-0.
At this juncture, the Steelers had outgained the Falcons 220-8 in total yards and held a commanding 253-55 advantage over Atlanta in total yards in the first half.
The Falcons finally put together a sustained drive to begin the second half. Still, the Steelers’ defence, led by cornerback Joey Porter Jr. and linebacker Mark Robinson, forced a Carlos Washington fumble at the Pittsburgh 5-yard line.
Safety Kenny Robinson promptly scooped up the ball, ending the Atlanta threat and preserving the shutout, even though it came against Atlanta’s backups.
The Steelers’ defense, throughout the preseason, demonstrated its strength with notable performances from T.J. Watt, Elandon Roberts, Toby Ndukwe, Quincy Roche, and newcomer Nick Herbig are all on the team.
Herbig, in particular, made his presence felt with a team-best 3.5 sacks in the preseason. Roche’s sack forced a fumble that the Steelers recovered just before the two-minute warning, exemplifying the defense’s tenacity.
Anthony McFarland spearheaded the Steelers’ rushing attack, which amassed a total of 175 yards. McFarland carried the ball 10 times for 55 yards, including a remarkable 31-yard run that showcased his explosive speed.
In summary, the Steelers’ preseason finale was a masterclass in all facets of the game. The first-team offence displayed its efficiency, the defence proved impenetrable, and the special teams added their share of contributions.
