Messi’s Inter Miami Impresses in MLS Victory over LAF
In a highly anticipated MLS matchup, Inter Miami, led by the legendary Lionel Messi, delivered an impressive performance, defeating the Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) with a score of 3-1. The clash took place at the BMO Stadium, attracting a record crowd of 22,921, including a star-studded audience featuring celebrities such as LeBron James, Leonardo DiCaprio, and members of Rage Against The Machine.
Giorgio Chiellini, the seasoned LAFC defender, heaped praise on Messi’s Inter Miami, describing them as the best team he has faced in MLS. “This team [Miami] is the best, by far, that I’ve faced in MLS, to be honest,” remarked Chiellini, who highlighted Messi’s influence on the game. With two assists from the Argentine maestro, Miami effectively contained LAFC and secured a victory that further solidified their unbeaten run.
In the post-game news conference, LAFC head coach Steve Cherundolo conceded Messi’s unrivalled brilliance, stating, “He’s the best player in the world, what did you think he was going to do when he came here?”
Messi’s arrival in MLS has been nothing short of spectacular. With two assists in this match, he has now amassed an impressive tally of 11 goals and five assists in just 11 games across all competitions since joining Miami in July. This remarkable form has propelled Inter Miami from being the last-placed team in the MLS Eastern Conference to genuine playoff contenders. Chiellini, a former Champions League finalist, expressed confidence in Miami’s postseason prospects, saying, “I think that they will join the playoffs.”
Chiellini also recognized the impact of Messi’s presence on MLS as a whole, emphasizing the heightened attention and prestige that the league has garnered since the football legend’s arrival. “”Leo’s entry into our league is excellent news, not just for Miami and the sport, but also for the attention that everyone is now giving to the MLS. It’s a huge step for this league,” he stated.
In another MLS showdown, the Los Angeles Football Club saw its four-game home winning streak come to an end with a 3-1 loss to Inter Miami. Despite the defeat, LAFC remains in third place in the MLS Western Conference, with an 11-8-7 record, totaling 40 points.
Ryan Hollingshead salvaged some pride for LAFC with a late goal in the 90th minute. Carlos Vela was credited with the assist, marking his eighth of the season. Notably, this was LAFC’s first home loss to an Eastern Conference opponent since May 29, 2021.
Inter Miami’s triumph was further solidified by standout performances from Facundo Farías, Jordi Alba, and Leonardo Campana, who all found the net. Messi, demonstrating his incredible playmaking abilities, provided two crucial assists during the game.
Drake Callender’s five saves ensured a sturdy defense for Miami, which has been on an undefeated streak since Messi’s debut with the club in July. Their impressive run also includes a Leagues Cup victory against Nashville SC in August.
Inter Miami’s victory was marked by the collective effort of their summer signings, as Messi, Farías, Avilés, Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Diego Gómez all started together for the first time.
The match drew a star-studded crowd, with notable attendees such as Prince Harry, actors Owen Wilson and Leonardo DiCaprio, singer-actress Selena Gomez, and comedian-actor Will Ferrell, who is part of the ownership group of LAFC.
Inter Miami’s ascent in MLS, fueled by the presence of Lionel Messi, continues to captivate fans and elevate the league’s profile on the global stage. As the regular season progresses, all eyes will be on Miami and their quest for playoff glory.
