Alexandro Santiago record world title against Nonita Donaire
Alexandro Santiago achieved his first world title tonight 29 July 2023, winning a majority decision over Nonito Donaire to claim the previously vacant WBC bantamweight belt.Official results for Santiago were 115-113, 116-112, and 116-112. Bad Left Hook’s two unofficial scores were 119-109 on both of our cards, implying that the judges thought the fight was closer than it was. Santiago (28-3-5, 14 KO) was closer to the pre-fight odds than most expected. Still, bettors clearly had reservations about the 40-year-old Donaire (42-8, 28 KO), and the combination of Father Time and Santiago’s excellent performance on the night proved too much for the Hall of Fame-bound Filipino star.
The punch figures were nearly even between Santiago and Donaire, which may or may not be correct, but they didn’t convey the whole tale. Donaire returned to what had injured him in the past, even while he was winning, “falling in love” with his left hook, perhaps to the expense of the broader game plan.
But this time, it was more of a necessity than a tactical error, according to Nonito, who feels it was simply because he didn’t fight the way he had trained.
“I’m still happy, and a big congrats to Alexandro, who deserves it. “I love the game, but we need to go back to the locker room and talk about it.” I was fine, but some things just didn’t sink in.
Donaire didn’t appear to be interested in retiring, but with his previously stated goal of going unbeaten in a division where that would have been difficult to achieve any time before he was 42, you have to wonder what’s there for him.
When asked what Nonito said him after the fight, Santiago remarked, It’s been an honor to fight such a legend like Nonito Donaire, and he just told me thank you for this great fight.
