Former NFL Player Russ Francis and AOPA Executive Richard McSpadden Killed in Lake Placid Plane Crash

 The incident occurred at Lake Placid Airport at 4:09 p.m., with local authorities responding swiftly to the scene.

Russ Francis, aged 70, a Super Bowl champion and former tight end for the New England Patriots and the San Francisco 49ers, was on board the ill-fated flight. He had a remarkable NFL career, making three Pro Bowl appearances and contributing significantly to his teams.
Richard McSpadden, the Senior Vice President of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) and a former commander of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, was the second victim in this tragic accident. McSpadden was a highly accomplished pilot and a respected figure in the aviation community.

The Cessna 177 Cardinal aircraft had experienced an emergency shortly after takeoff, and the pilot attempted to return to the airport but tragically failed to reach the runway. The collision is now being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board.

In recent years, Russ Francis had pursued his passion for aviation, owning Lake Placid Airways and earning qualifications as a pilot for both airplanes and helicopters. He was known for his larger-than-life personality both on and off the football field.
