Toshakhana allusion
Following the disqualification of the PTI head by the Election Commission of Pakistan for making “false statements and incorrect declarations,” the Toshakhana issue became a major cause of disagreement in national politics.
Last year, parliamentarians from the ruling coalition filed a referral alleging that Imran failed to reveal information of the gifts he received from the Toshaskhana (during his tenure as prime minister).
According to the verdict, the former premier was also deemed to have committed corrupt conduct under sections 167 and 173 of the constitution.
“A criminal investigation will be launched against him for making a false statement.”
On May 10, Imran was indicted in the case, and his motion to make the Toshkhana case inadmissible was denied. The verdict was overturned by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on July 4.
The Toshakhana case against Imran was found maintainable by an Islamabad district and sessions court on July 8. Following that, the former premier appealed the session court’s decision to the IHC.
On August 4, the Islamabad High Court overturned a session court ruling that determined the PTI chairman’s Toshakhana reference to be maintainable.
IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq had directed that the case be heard again in the lower court. The judge also denied PTI chairman Imran Khan’s request to transfer the case to another court and scheduled a hearing for next week on the request to restore the right to defend.
