Dramatic Escape: Hawaii’s Maui Island Residents Forced to Jump into Water to Evade Raging Flames

In reaction to the fire, Acting Governor Sylvia Luke and Maui Mayor Richard Bissen issued emergency proclamations. The Hawaii National Guard has been called into action.
According to the National Weather Service, Hurricane Dora, which was 500 miles south of the island chain, and a very powerful high pressure system north of the state caused severe, damaging winds overnight.

“These strong winds, combined with low humidity levels, are creating dangerous fire weather conditions that will last until Wednesday afternoon,” the weather agency stated on Wednesday.
