Supermoon Illuminates the Night

The highlight of the night will undoubtedly be the Supermoon. While the definition of a “super” moon varies, all agree that in 2023, both full moons in August meet the criteria. This particular Supermoon will be exceptionally close to Earth, creating a larger and more brilliant spectacle in the night sky.

A Supermoon occurs when the Moon is at its perigee, the closest point to Earth in its orbit. As a result, it appears up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than a typical full moon.

The Blue Moon Phenomenon

Adding to the celestial drama is the occurrence of a Blue Moon. By the modern definition introduced by Sky & Telescope magazine in 1946, a Blue Moon refers to the second full moon within a calendar month. In this case, the Blue Moon shines its silvery light on August 30, 2023. It’s important to note that this term has nothing to do with the moon’s colour but rather its timing.

Rakhi Purnima: A Cultural Connection

Coinciding with these astronomical wonders is the Hindu festival of Rakhi Purnima, also known as Raksha Bandhan. This tradition celebrates the unbreakable bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters of all ages tie a rakhi, a symbolic cotton bracelet, around their brothers’ wrists, symbolizing their love and protection. In return, brothers offer gifts to their sisters, strengthening the bond of care and affection.

Rakhi Purnima, translating to “the bond of protection, obligation, or care,” adds a cultural and spiritual layer to the celestial show, making it an even more special occasion for many around the world.
